 OCTOBER 31, 2015 • 10:00-Noon

REPLACING THE LAWN

OCTOBER 10, 2015 • 9:30-Noon

This workshop explores possibilities for replacing the lawn including: hardscapes, drought tolerant plants and redesigning the use of the space.  For example, options like trading the lawn for something more functional such as a horseshoe pit, bocce court, patio or deck will be explored as well as other ideas using less water while being aesthetically appealing such as a rock garden, wildlife habitat, or recirculating water feature. Information about how to plan and execute the transformation will be provided as well as time for questions and problem solving. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the Bel Giardino gardens to see many of the ideas actually implemented on the property.

This workshop focuses on successfully selecting the right native plants for desired functions such as attracting wildlife (including pollinating insects), shading,  screening, or using less water while requiring minimal maintenance.

In addition to focusing on the virtues of specific plants, attractive, symbiotic plant combinations will be showcased. Tips for planting, establishing and “watering” native plants will be provided in order to improve success rate in using native plants. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the Bel Giardino gardens to see many of the ideas actually implemented on the property.
